John Leonard (Jack) Swigert Jr. (19311982) was a late replacement for
command module pilot Thomas Mattingly on Apollo XIII in April, 1970. The
moon mission was aborted after an onboard explosion forced the crew
into the lunar module as a lifeboat. The astronauts returned safely to
earth. After his career as an astronaut, Swigert became executive
director of the Committee on Science and Technology for the U.S.
House of Representatives. In 1982 he was elected to the Congress, but
died of bone cancer before he could take office.
